February 10, 2010

THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA and THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCE OF SOUTH AFRICA INVITE YOU TO A LECTURE BY:

Professor Gary Stevens

SARChI Chair in Experimental Petrology, Department of Earth Science, Stellenbosch University

entitled  ‘’The Origin of Earth’s early Continents’

‘The geology of the Barberton granite greenstone belt represents a uniquely well preserved section through one of Earth’s oldest pieces of continental crust and provides a fascinating insight into the processes that shaped our planet more than 3 billion years ago. This lecture will focus on the messages that these rocks provide for us on the processes that produced the ancient continental crust; on the volcanic activity associated with the destruction of oceanic crust as an ancient ocean closed; as well on the intense pressure that the continental crust experienced when the ocean closed and high mountains were created through the collision of the continental masses.’
