Infectious Diseases Symposium: Call to Young Scientists to Submit Abstracts

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina will be hosting an Infectious Diseases Symposium from 12 to 13 April 2018 at  in Durban South Africa. The theme of the symposium is “Surveillance and Response to Infectious Diseases and Comorbidities: An African and German Perspective”. The symposium will explore the following topics: antimicrobial resistance; one health; comorbidities; HIV; TB; Malaria; and HCV.

The symposium will be preceded, on 11 April 2018, by a one-day workshop on “Science Advice”. The workshop is jointly organised with the International Network for Governmental Science Advice – Africa (INGSA-Africa) and the International Council for Science Regional Office for Africa (ICSU-ROA). The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the capacity of scientists in providing science advice to national governments; develop and share science advice principles and guidelines pertaining to infectious diseases.

ASSAf is seeking young scientists from Africa to participate in this workshop and symposium. The multilateral event will provide a platform for scientific exchange among senior and young scientists from Africa and Germany in the field of infectious diseases.

Eligibility

  • This call is open to early career researchers who are based in Africa. Applicants should meet the following criteria to participate:

  • Be resident in Africa

  • Be early career researchers (those undertaking PhD or a Postdoctoral Fellowship)

  • Be under the age of forty (40)

  • Have research experience associated with infectious diseases (i.e. tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS and HCV) and antimicrobial resistance

  • Commit to be present for the duration of the workshop and symposium

  • Submission of abstract that will be the basis for presentation at the symposium

  • Willing to present and share current research results at the symposium

 

Symposium Participation and Application

ASSAf invites submission of abstracts for oral presentations. Interested candidates, who meet the above-mentioned criteria should please complete the accompanying application form and return it to Ms Marvin Mandiwane (marvin@assaf.org.za) Tel: +27 (0)12 349 6648 by Friday, 10 February 2018. There is no registration fee to attend the symposium. ASSAf will cover the travel and hospitality costs for the selected candidates for the duration of the workshop and symposium. Further information about the symposium will be circulated.

Abstract Format

Applicants should follow the instructions clearly:

  • Abstract must not be more than 300 words (excluding Title, Authors and Institutions) on the attached form

  • Abstract must be written in English

  • Abstract title must be in boldface, capital letters (lower case) and centered

  • Abstract font must be Century Gothic 11 with A4 set up margins

 

Abstract Acceptance

Abstracts will be reviewed by a panel which reserves the right to accept and allocate oral presentations.

 

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by 24 February 2018.
