SUMMARY:ASSAf Workshop:  Research\, Development and Innovation on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technologies in South Africa
DESCRIPTION:As a stakeholder in the field of nuclear technologies\, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) would like to invite you to participate in a workshop on research\, development and innovation (RDI) on nuclear technologies in South Africa. We would like your input and feedback on the preliminary findings of one of our ongoing studies. \nASSAf has been commissioned to undertake an evaluation of RDI of peaceful uses of nuclear technologies in South Africa. The study was initiated by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and is being administered by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) as the Energy Secretariat established by the DSI. SANEDI is an entity of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) which hosts the National Liaison Office. \nThe ASSAf study will assist in supporting the high-level agreement between South Africa and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by providing a solid foundation upon which to draft a national strategic framework on RDI on peaceful uses of nuclear technologies in South Africa. \nThe study is following the methodology of a consensus study which relies on a panel of experts to provide the intellect\, expertise and relevant information\, coordinated and managed by the ASSAf secretariat. \nDuring this workshop the panel\, chaired by Prof Machaba (Mike) Sathekge of the University of Pretoria\, will present on the information collated towards the evaluation followed by some high-level findings. \nThe intention is to verify the information and to test the high-level findings with the relevant national stakeholders and role players across all sectors. \nDelegate attendance will be virtual using the Zoom platform. \nShould you wish to participate please click here to register and ensure you receive the necessary information and details ahead of the workshop. \n

This year the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) would like to recognise the huge potential of young people to find new and better solutions that support the transition to a sustainable future\, along with others all over the globe. \nIP rights can support goals\, transform ideas into reality\, generate income\, create jobs and make a positive impact on the world around us. With IP rights\, young people have access to some of the key tools they need to advance their ambitions. He will give his views on Fees must Fall and the decolonisation of education debate and to what extend these take us back to the issues of the struggle days (70s and 80s) and how should we contextualise these issues in contemporary times. Also under discussion will be lessons learnt from history as academicians trying to build the next generation of scientists and what should be done to fix the problems. In the context of Freedom Day\, Prof Pityana will also shed some light on the top three things he would prioritise for change in our country.
