SUMMARY:Catalysing Change: A Global Health Approach in the Wake of Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:Over the past four years\, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically disrupted daily life\, severely stressed health systems across the globe and exposed stark inequalities in managing global health crises. It has revealed significant shortcomings in disease surveillance and data sharing and highlighted the urgent need to strengthen global health research. The strategy of intensive containment of the COVID-19 pandemic often came at the expense of managing other infectious diseases\, such as Tuberculosis and HIV\, leading to uneven and nationally focused solutions. \n  \nThe need to develop a more equitable and unified strategy for global health\, particularly in preparing for and responding to future pandemics has become apparent. The upcoming webinar\, “Catalysing Change: A Global Health Approach in the Wake of Pandemics” on 14 May 2024\, brings together experts from national and international health bodies\, the political arena\, and the pharmaceutical industry to address the pressing issues of global health politics and pandemic prevention. The webinar will specifically focus on ensuring equitable access to medications and vaccines\, fostering global health research\, and improving surveillance and data-sharing mechanisms. It takes on the conference brief “Global Health Approach for Infectious Diseases – A Proposal for the Next Decade” (weblink)\, a joint publication by the national academies of Ethiopia (EAS)\, Germany (Leopoldina)\, Senegal (ANSTS)\, and South Africa (ASSAf)\, which resulted from the workshop “Infectious Diseases beyond COVID-19” in Berlin on 23-24 May 2023 (weblink). \nThe discussion will be held in English. You are welcome to ask questions during the Q&A session. \nANSTS-ASSAf-EAS-Leopoldina International Virtual Panel Discussion \n“Catalysing Change: A Global Health Approach in the Wake of Pandemics” \nTuesday\, 14 May 2024 \n12:00 – 13:00 CEST \nRegistration: https://leopoldina-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_LKsd3QhJSuaQdfbkGW_SeA \nAfter registration\, you will receive a confirmation with further details. Please also check your junk mail folder as automatic mails might be filtered. \nPlease feel free to forward this invitation to interested persons. \nWe look forward to welcoming you in the virtual space.

SUMMARY:Unmasking the Enigma called FinTech
DESCRIPTION:Prof Jonathan Jansen\, President\, Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) cordially invites you to the 5th Annual ASSAf Science-Business Leadership Forum titled “Unmasking the Enigma called FinTech” \nDate:                    3 November 2023 \nTime:                     09:00 to 11:00 (SA Time) \nPlatform:               ZOOM Webinar \nRegistration:         Click here to register (You will receive a joining link immediately after registration) \nEnquiries:              Dr Tebogo Mabotha (tebogo@assaf.org.za) \nBackground  \nThe concept of ‘money’ and the world of financial services and products have undergone a remarkable transformative evolution since the Global Financial Crisis\, propelled by technological advancements and the global shift towards the digital economy. These financial technology (FinTech) developments range from rapid payment systems\, mobile money\, digital banking (including central bank digital currencies\, CBDCs)\, cryptocurrencies\, blockchains etc. FinTech promises to not only shape the future of transactions but also redefine the fundamental tenets of monetary value and exchange. Between 2010 and 2019\, the global FinTech sector witnessed a significant surge in investments\, totalling over US$165.5 billion. According to a recent report by the Boston Consulting Group\, annual FinTech revenues are projected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030. \nFintech industry\, while promising transformative solutions\, is not without its challenges. These challenges revolve around several core issues: technological applications to be considered; legal\, regulatory and policy hurdles; security concerns; customer trust; data protection and the impact on previously overlooked demographics. Understanding these core elements and the broader FinTech environment can help shed light and shape FinTech today and in the decades to come\, particularly in Africa. \nThe forum will embark on stimulating conversation on this enigma called FinTech\, in order to understand deeply what FinTech is; its adoption on the African Continent; the regulatory conundrum; challenges and benefits posed for regulators; delving into questions of whether South Africa should introduce a “digital Rand”\, i.e. a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC)\, the benefits and risks of such a currency; and how technology such as AI can be leveraged to address money laundering\, fraud\, identity theft\, combatting financing of terrorism and proliferation financing etc. We have three panellists who will share their vast expertise; Prof Vivienne Lawack (DVC: Academic\, University of the Western Cape); Prof Co-Pierre Georg (SARChI Chair: Blockchain Technology\, University of Cape Town) and Prof Louis de Koker (Professor of Law\, La Trobe University\, Australia). \nThe Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) annually hosts the ASSAf Science-Business Leadership Forum colloquium in which we bring together prominent scientists/scholars and leading experts from the business community to deliberate on a matter of shared significance. The forum is hosted by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and moderated by ASSAf’s President\, Prof Jonathan Jansen. \n

SUMMARY:Pioneering IP Management Programme for African Researchers
DESCRIPTION:The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) in collaboration with the Lesotho Academy of Science and Technology (LAST) and the Botswana Academy of Science (BAS)\, will host a workshop on Pioneering Intellectual Property Management Programme for African Researchers on the 31th of October 2023 in Maseru\, Lesotho. The workshop will provide a forum to connect Academics\, Researchers\, Business and Policy Makers in Science Technology and Innovation (STI) to collaborate with the aim of advancing Africa’s STI4SDGs priorities. This refers to the application of Science\, Technology and Innovation (STI) as a catalyst for achieving the SDGs\, with special focus on human capital\, infrastructural and delivery systems for fast tracking the achievement of SDGs 1\, 2\, 3\, 4 \,6\,8 and 9. A priority in advancing Africa’s developmental goals is understanding the role of  intellectual property (IP)  in enhancing entrepreneurial culture among young people in the STI ecosystem. \nThe workshop is based on recommendations originating from the webinar “Innovation and intellectual property management in advancing Agenda 2063 in Africa” which was hosted by the three academies on May 25 2023. There was consensus in establishing an action plan to address some of the IP related issues raised. It is in this context that the Academies will host the workshop supported by the Department of Science\, Technology and Innovation- Lesotho with the respective partners. \nThe meeting will provide a platform for the exchange of information and ideas on IP ownership and management with entrepreneurship in STI being a target outcome. The workshop objectives include demonstrating how existing research data\, innovation\, prototypes\, policies and knowledge can inform ways to Fastrack Agenda 2063 and contribute to the SDGs. \nThe Minister of Information Communication Technology Science and Innovation\, Lesotho\, Honourable Nthati Moroosi will deliver a key note address at the official opening of this event. \n  \nThe media are invited as follows: \nOpening Ceremony \nDate:              Tuesday\, 31 October 2023 \nTime:              09:00 –12:15 \nVenue:          Avani\, Maseru\, Lesotho \n  \nTo RSVP\, contact  joshua.takalimane@last.org.ls  or tozama@ASSAf.org.za or dikabo.mogopodi@mopipi.ub.bw

DESCRIPTION:World Food Day (WFD) is celebrated across 150 countries yearly on 16 October. The theme for 2023 is Water is life\, water is food: leave no one behind. The campaign intents to raise awareness worldwide on water as a foundation of life and food. According to the United Nations (UN)\, 2.3 billion people live in water-stressed countries\, while 3.2 billion people live in agricultural areas with high water scarcity. These water constraints have a negative impact on food security and nutrition. \nIn South Africa a notable proportion of the population is food insecure\, for instance\, from almost 18 million households\, 15% and 6% respectively have inadequate and severe inadequate access to food. Over 60% of these households were in urban areas\, with the City of Cape Town (11\,6%) and the City of Johannesburg (11\,5%) having the highest proportions of households that experienced hunger in all the six metros. Urban food insecurity is characterised by low dietary diversity\, high malnutrition and obesity\, and distinct hunger seasons. It is estimated that by 2050\, eight in 10 people will be living in urban areas\, which means that the prevalence of food insecurity within urban Southern African communities will increase. There is therefore an urgent need to develop policies and solutions to address this “looming crisis” and to manage the water-food nexus in a more sustainable and equitable manner. \nIn light of this\, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and the Green Youth Network (GYN) have partnered to host a webinar to commemorate WFD 2023. The theme of the webinar is Opportunities towards Sustainable Food Security in South African Urban Settings and will be held on 27 October 2023 from 10:00 to 11:30 (SAST). The webinar aims to explore youth driven solutions to strengthen food security in South African urban settings while preserving and managing water in a sustainable manner. The dialogue will engage on the status of food security in South African cities/urban areas; and explore and showcase solutions by the youth\, that have a potential to strengthen food security in South African urban areas and cities\, taking into consideration the challenge of  water scarcity. We invite academics\, researchers\, entrepreneurs\, women\, youth\, policy makers as well as members of the public to be in attendance. \nZoom registration link: \nhttps://assaf-org-za.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEkcOGqqTIvGdNO9z-iwNBlkFmwVpOsbwrl#/registration

SUMMARY:Addressing the Recent Measles Outbreak in South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Date:         23 October 2023 \nTime:         10:00 to 11:30 \nRegister:    Click here to register \nVenue:      Zoom (link to be provided upon registration) \nBACKGROUND \nSouth Africa is currently grappling with a notable resurgence of measles\, a highly contagious viral infection that poses a serious threat to public health. This outbreak has raised concerns about immunisation coverage\, healthcare infrastructure\, and the broader impact on community well-being. As a means of contributing towards a solution\, ASSAf is hosting a webinar to propose strategies to effectively manage and mitigate the ongoing and future measles outbreaks. \nThis webinar aims to: \n\nInform: Communicate accurate and up-to-date information about the measles outbreak\, including its causes\, transmission\, symptoms\, and potential consequences.\nDiscuss Contributing Factors: Examine factors that have contributed to the outbreak\, such as vaccine hesitancy\, gaps in immunisation coverage\, healthcare access disparities\, and challenges in disease   surveillance.\nShare Best Practices: Explore successful strategies employed by healthcare organisations\, government agencies\, and NGOs to contain and manage measles outbreaks\, within South Africa and globally.\nFormulate Action Plans: Collaboratively propose action plans and recommendations for immediate response and long-term prevention strategies to curb the measles outbreak and prevent future   recurrences.
