DESCRIPTION:The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) cordially invites you to a conversation with Prof Barney Pityana Professor Emeritus of Law\, University of South Africa and Visiting Honorary Professor\, Allan Gray Institute for Ethical Leadership\, Department of Philosophy\, Rhodes University on The Plight of Academia and STI in the Post-democratic Era. \nRSVP:  Click here \nProf Pityana will talk about what Freedom Day means to him and share his thoughts on Steve Biko\, former President Nelson Mandela and other stalwarts of the struggle that inspired him to take up issues related to social justice. He will give his views on Fees must Fall and the decolonisation of education debate and to what extend these take us back to the issues of the struggle days (70s and 80s) and how should we contextualise these issues in contemporary times. Also under discussion will be lessons learnt from history as academicians trying to build the next generation of scientists and what should be done to fix the problems. In the context of Freedom Day\, Prof Pityana will also shed some light on the top three things he would prioritise for change in our country.

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) recognises the scope of books – a link between the past and the future\, a bridge between generations and across cultures. \nBy championing books and copyright\, ASSAf supports UNESCO in standing up for creativity\, diversity and equal access to knowledge\, with the work across the board – from the Creative Cities of Literature network to promoting literacy and mobile learning and advancing Open Access to scientific knowledge and educational resources. The COVID-19 pandemic has also reminded us all of the importance of books and reading for comfort and escapism. DESCRIPTION:Every year on 26 April\, South Africa along with the rest of the world\, celebrate World Intellectual Property Day to learn about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. This year the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) would like to recognise the huge potential of young people to find new and better solutions that support the transition to a sustainable future\, along with others all over the globe. \nIP rights can support goals\, transform ideas into reality\, generate income\, create jobs and make a positive impact on the world around us. With IP rights\, young people have access to some of the key tools they need to advance their ambitions.
