This Innovation for Inclusive Development (IID) learning intervention hosted by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) sets out to discuss the deployment of open data driven solutions to improve public service delivery, empower citizen, create economic opportunities and solve societal challenges. To better understand and harness the impact of open data, there’s a need to delve deeper to unpack the dynamics of open data practices in South Africa.

The purpose of the seminar is to bring practitioners from the private and public sectors to share lessons learnt either as speakers or as participants. The seminar seeks to share evidence-based knowledge and understanding on how open data works, the value of open data and unlock the potential benefits and contribution of open data to society and data ‘owners’. The seminar will explore topics that include: the state of open data ecosystem, open data research and the potential benefit of open data in South Africa; the challenges of institutionalising government open data; open data in public service delivery, accountability and transparency; open data governance, policy and legislation; address risks, privacy, ethics and quality issues; open data for social and public benefit; measuring the impact of open data; innovation, economic and social benefits of open data in the private sector and the future of open data.

The presentations will be followed by engagement through a Q&A session. Approximately 30 invited delegates will participate.
