On 14 March, the African Academy of Sciences announced two mobility funds – the Science and Language Mobility Scheme Africa and the Africa India Mobility Fund (AIMF), to encourage collaboration between African researchers and African and Indian researchers, respectively.

The calls for applications opened today on 3 April 2018.

  1. The Africa-India Mobility Fund is accepting applications for travel grants from researchers from Africa and India. The programme, which is a partnership of African Academy of Sciences, the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance and Wellcome, will fund short-term visits of up to three months for researchers to travel in either direction.  Funding will be given to nationals of India and African countries to support collaboration in research in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, dengue, malaria, vector-borne diseases, parasitic infections, emerging infections, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, health systems research, antimicrobial resistance, microbiome, drug development and general biomedical sciences. This call is also open to non-African investigators resident on the continent or overseas citizen of India. The applications for AIMF will be on a rolling basis with feedback on the outcome given within two months until further notice.
  2. The Science and Language Mobility Scheme Africa offers travel grants for short term visits of up to six months to researchers in Franco and Anglophone Africa in either direction over the next five years. The programme, which is a joint effort between the AAS, Wellcome and Institut Pasteur, aims to break down language and cultural barriers while strengthening scientific collaboration.  This is a closed call accepting applications from the Human Hereditary and Health in Africa (H3 Africa) and the Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science (DELTAS Africa) grantees. It is in addition opened to any scientists affiliated to one of the 10 member institutions of the Institut Pasteur International Network in Africa. Applications for the Science and Language Mobility Scheme Africa close on 25 May 2018. Applications for this scheme can be submitted either in English or French.
