Royal Society of South Africa and the Academy of Science of South Africa invite you to a public lecture by Professor Ken Findlay, Research Chair: Oceans Economy, Cape Peninsula University of Technology will present a talk on ‘Oceans economies, governance and the need for a blue economy’

Abstract: Human populations depend on a number of provisioning, cultural and regulatory ecosystem services, including a suite of services from the ocean environment. This talk will be focusing on the expanding oceans economy in South Africa through Operation Phakisa and the need for associated governance frameworks to ensure a balance between resource use and ecosystem function on which ecosystem services depend.  

About the Speaker: 

Ken Findlay directs the Centre for Sustainable Oceans. He was previously director of the MRI Whale Unit of the University of Pretoria. As a marine mammal biologist, he has been integrally involved in marine mammal research (particularly impacts of human pressures on marine mammal populations) in the Southern African region, in the Arabian Sea region, the Western Indian Ocean and in the Southern Ocean for the last 30 years. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and is a member of both the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group and Sirenian Specialist Group. He was integrally involved in the IWC’s IDCR and SOWER Antarctic survey programmes between 1991 and 2005 and in the IWC’s Comprehensive Assessment of Humpback Whales since 2000.

*Directions to SAAO Auditorium : From the N2, turn off to the M57 – Liesbeek Parkway; turning in the direction of Cape Town and continue until the traffic lights with Hartleyvale (hockey and football) on your left. Turn right at traffic lights into Observatory Road, pass the River Club; the S A Astronomical Observatory is next on the left. Once through the security gates bear left following the SALT signs to the auditorium i.e. last building on the left (white with stoep & ramp).
