Invitation to a discussion on Disaster Risk Management Fire & Emergency Services Assessment

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) commissioned a thoroughand scientific research intervention to determinethe ability of municipalities – across all municipalcategories – to perform functions in relation to disaster riskmanagement, fire services and emergency services.

A “deep dive”analysis was needed to arrive at a detailed understanding of the challenges and to describe the essential elements of “bestpractice” disaster risk management, fire services and emergency services systems and how the elements interact as a complexadaptive system.

SALGA would like to present the research and its findings to interested stakeholders and to afford an opportunity of engagement on the outcomes. To this effect SALGA, in partnership with the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), will host a virtual seminar from 10:00 to 12:00 on 26 November 2021, which will be open to the public.

The objectives of the seminar are as follows:

1. To provide details (background, purpose, methodology, findings and recommendations) of the research on the abilityof municipalities to perform functions in relation to disasterrisk management, fire services and emergency services.

2. Raise awareness of the research within the academiccommunity and to afford an opportunity for engagement andfurther deliberation on the research.
