Big Data and Big Science Awareness Day

You are invited to the upcoming Big Data and Big Science Awareness Day, scheduled to take place on 8 May 2024 at Solomon Mahlangu house, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

This event aims to foster collaboration around big science facilities and big data, focusing on synchrotron and neutron research infrastructures, and lab source facilities.

These facilities offer tremendous potential for growing science in South Africa, especially in the fields of energy and engineering, food security, biomedicine and natural and cultural heritage. Our goals for this one-day meeting include explaining the benefits of these facilities, increasing facility and training accessibility, developing research projects proposal for success, and networking between local facilities.

The Big Data and Big Science Awareness Day will feature a diverse range of activities, including keynote presentations, panel discussions, and a special ‘Think Tank’ session, where selected ‘Think Tank’ participants will have the opportunity to present their project ideas to a panel of experts. The panel will provide valuable feedback and guidance to help develop these project ideas towards a project proposal. We believe this session will be immensely beneficial for individuals seeking expert input and mentorship for their projects.

We are inviting participants to submit for poster presentations to showcase their facilities or how using of scientific instrumentation has grown their research. We also invite students, postgraduates and early career researchers to submit a project summary for consideration the ‘Think Tank’ session.

This is a hybrid event with a limited number of in person attendants, to allow the broadest accessibility. So if you would like to attend in person, please register soon!
