The Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform (WADDP) at the University of the Witwatersrand proudly announces the induction of two more distinguished WADDP researchers into the Global Young Academy (GYA).
Associate Professor Thashree Marimuthu and Dr. Gillian Dumsile Mahumane join Prof. Pradeep Kumar as GYA members who were recently inducted at the GYA’s Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists held in Washington, D.C (USA) from May 7-10, 2024. This prestigious achievement underscores the global recognition of the WADDP research team and highlights their commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and innovation at the unit. All three GYA member are members of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS).
About the Recent Inductees
Professor Marimuthu, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at WADDP, focuses on the molecular engineering of precise systems for therapeutic applications, with expertise in biomaterials and bio-metals. She is a recognized mentor who employs modern pedagogy and innovative teaching practices – her committed approach to research, teaching, and social responsiveness has earned her a reputation as an engaged and impactful academic.
Dr. Mahumane is a pharmaceutical researcher, biopharmaceutics lecturer, and academic specializing in advanced drug delivery technologies and tissue regeneration. Her research scope includes neurotrauma systems using polymer-based biomaterials (molecularly imprinted polymers, nanofibers, hydrogels, nanoparticles, and films), and she is also a passionate educator – imparting knowledge to the next generation of pharmaceutical researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand.
About the Global Young Academy (GYA)
The GYA is a global organization that brings together early and mid-career researchers to address global challenges through scientific excellence and collaboration. Membership is highly competitive and limited to 200 members, with the academy receiving around 350 applications annually, of which only 30-40 are selected based on demonstrated and outstanding achievements in their respective fields, with a specific focus on societal impact through science. Dr. Mahumane and Prof. Marimuthu’s selections were announced in April 2024, marking the beginning of a five-year term. Previously, WADDP researcher Prof. Pradeep Kumar was nominated and inducted for the 2020 -2025 cycle.
Significance of the Induction
The nomination and induction of three WADDP researchers into the GYA is a testament to the research excellence and grounding received at the WADDP research unit, a flagship research entity of the University of the Witwatersrand fostering a research environment that promotes the growth of Early Career Researchers and aligned with the GYA founding principles and theme for the 2024 International Conference of Young Scientists conference, namely ‘Transformative and Inclusive Science for a Sustainable Future’.
Professor Yahya Choonara, Director and Mentor at the WADDP, expressed pride in the achievements of the inducted WADDP research team members: ‘This induction is a clear recognition of the hard work and innovative research being carried out at the WADDP. We are incredibly proud of our team and look forward to their continued scientific contributions and advancement on the global stage.
Professor Marimuthu stated, ‘Being inducted into the GYA offers an opportunity for leadership and scientific diplomacy, enabling South Africans to advocate for transformative and inclusive science for a sustainable future on a global scale. Professors Kumar and Marimuthu would like to emphasise ‘Science for social justice’ encompasses five As, namely Accessibility, Affordability, Availability, Appropriateness, and Advocacy, and is a concept that I will continue to drive forward on a global scale through the GYA’.
Dr. Mahumane stated, ‘Being inducted into the GYA is a tremendous honour. It provides an excellent platform for furthering our research goals and collaborating with other young scientists worldwide to tackle pressing global issues.
GYA members engage in various activities targeting Scientific Diplomacy in Africa and addressing global challenges in health and related fields. The involvement of WADDP researchers will further enhance our mission to lead in innovative drug delivery solutions and contribute to global health improvements.
