The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) will host a lecture on Are we failing our youth? on the 10th of September 2024 online (Zoom platform). The Annual Humanities Lecture is a significant event on the ASSAf calendar and the inaugural Lecture was held on 9 March 2017. The purpose of this prestigious event is to promote the Humanities in the country and to draw attention to its relevance amongst school learners, university students, scholars, and the broader contemporary South African society, as well as foster dialogue on relevant issues. The lecture this year will be delivered by Prof Saths Cooper, the President of the Pan African Psychology Union and focus on the youth—have we failed them? Prof Cooper’s contributions to the field of psychology in South Africa and worldwide have had a significant and far-reaching influence. His unwavering dedication to social justice serves as a source of inspiration for several individuals within the academic and activist circles. Prof Cooper is the current president of the Pan-African Psychology Union and the past president of the International Union of Psychological Science and the Psychological Society of South Africa.
This lecture series aims to foster discussion and debate about the complex societal concerns and seemingly insurmountable dilemmas, within ASSAf and its multidisciplinary suite of activities and projects. By hosting this annual lecture, ASSAf underscores the value of the Humanities in contributing to a well-rounded and informed society.
