It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Professor Roseanne Diab, Vice-President of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and former Executive Officer of the Academy from 2008 to 2018.
Professor Diab was an Emeritus Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where she made a lasting contribution as a scholar, mentor, and academic leader. A highly respected atmospheric scientist, Professor Diab was widely recognised for her pioneering research in air quality, atmospheric pollution, and climate change. Her work significantly advanced understanding of environmental challenges affecting human health and sustainable development, particularly in the Global South.
In parallel, she was a passionate and tireless advocate for gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), working to dismantle systemic barriers and create more inclusive scientific ecosystems. She served as Director of the global initiative GenderInSITE, championing and chaired the Gender Advisory Committee of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), where her leadership helped shape global discourse and action on gender equality in science.
Throughout her distinguished career, Professor Diab served on numerous other national and international professional societies, advisory councils, and governing boards. She played a leading role in high-level initiatives addressing science policy, emerging and transformative technologies, environmental sustainability, and equity in higher education. Her influence extended across disciplines and borders, and she was widely sought after for her insight, integrity, and principled leadership.
Within ASSAf, Professor Diab’s impact was both profound and enduring. As Executive Officer, she was instrumental in strengthening the Academy’s institutional foundations, enhancing its national and international standing, and deepening its role as a trusted source of evidence-based scientific advice. As Vice-President, she continued to serve the Academy with distinction, offering wise counsel, steady leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the Academy’s mission and values.
Professor Diab’s passing is an immeasurable loss to ASSAf, to the South African and global scientific communities, and to all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her. Her distinguished career, her steadfast commitment to scientific excellence, and her deep sense of service have left an indelible mark on our institution, our country, and the many individuals whose lives she touched.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we also celebrate Professor Diab’s remarkable life and legacy. She will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her mentorship of young and matured scientists, and her unwavering dedication to advancing science in the service of society.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her husband, her children, and her entire family during this difficult time.
Hamba kahle, Professor Diab. Your legacy endures, and your light will continue to guide us.
