ASSAf at 30 – Advancing Knowledge for the Public Good

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) proudly celebrates 30 years of advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and strengthening the role of science in shaping a better future for South Africa and the African continent.

Since its establishment in 1996, ASSAf has grown into a trusted voice in the national and global science landscape — convening leading scholars, producing authoritative consensus studies, promoting open and equitable scholarly publishing, and championing evidence-informed policymaking. For three decades, the Academy has worked at the intersection of science and society, ensuring that research and expertise contribute to addressing pressing challenges ranging from climate change and health to technological transformation and inclusive development.

“Thirty years is more than a milestone — it is a moment to reflect on our collective achievements and to renew our commitment to the future,” said Prof Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer. “The Academy’s strength lies in the diversity and excellence of its Members and partners, and in its enduring mission to harness science for the benefit of society.”

Over the past three decades, the ASSAf has provided independent, evidence-based advice to government and key stakeholders; strengthened the visibility, quality, and impact of African research and scholarly publishing; supported the development of the next generation of scientists and thought leaders; advanced international collaboration and science diplomacy; and championed open science and responsible innovation in the service of society.

As ASSAf looks ahead, it remains committed to strengthening the national system of innovation, deepening global partnerships, and ensuring that science continues to serve as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive progress.
