The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) invites you to a conversation with Dr Caroline Pule on Shaping the future - gender equality and equity.
Dr Caroline Pule is a Biomedical Scientist who is passionate about global health, medical research, and ensuring we have a disease-free nation. She affiliated in the Global Surgery Division, Department of Surgery at the University of Cape Town where she is an independent researcher, acts as manager for Global Surgery Research Cluster and MSc/PhD Fellowship convener. Dr Pule attained her PhD and MMedSc Degrees in Medical Sciences (Molecular Biology), Tuberculosis (TB) research field in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, from the University of Stellenbosch. This is after attaining her BTech (Hons degree) in Medical Biotechnology from Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, at Cape Peninsula University of Technology with an overall achievement of 14 distinctions in 2012 and she was counted among the 20 best performing students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology for that academic year, where she also completed her undergraduate degree in Biotechnology.
She is a Good Will Ambassador for the Tygerberg Hospital Children's Trust and is a founder/CEO of “Caroline Pule Science and Literacy Foundation” (CPSLF), a foundation that helps establish science clubs in disadvantaged communities and to distribute scientific literature to these communities. Dr Pule was recognized as one of the M&G 200 Young South Africans 2020, in the health category and as one of the “Inspiring Fifty South Africa 2020 Winners” 2020. Dr Pule is a UCT-Harvard Programme of Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC) research fellow, UNICEF fellow and her primary research focuses on TB Surgery, drug resistance and drug-discovery and Stillirths data reporting strengthening. Coming from a TB Biology background, she explores Surgery as a treatment adjunct modality for drug-resistant TB, in settings with a very high TB prevalence and also clinical research adding value towards TB drug-discovery. She is also involved in other multiple ongoing Global Surgery research projects in collaboration with Harvard University Medical School. Additionally, she helps as a volunteer scientist for the CrowdFight Covid-19 initiative, a global organisation enabling volunteer scientists from different countries to work together to fight Covid-19 pandemic. A devout Christian, an advocate for women in STEM and a philanthropist.
